Garfish Attack - The Story of Bukit Merah
Bukit Merah is a hill in Singapore, famous for its red soil.
1.
There was once a king, who was the most handsome in the land. No one could compare to him and he grew haughty and proud, always seeking praise. He could not bear it if others got praised for clever antics or acts of bravery, and his jealousy would grow into hatred. In fact, he would actually kill those who drew attention away from him.
2.One day, a shoal of garfish came to the shores of Singapore and began leaping up the beaches and attacking the people on the beaches and fishermen at sea.
3.The garfish were strong and large, with long hard snouts and razor sharp teeth, which they pierced right through the bodies of the people with violence.
4.When the king heard this terrible news, he got up on his war elephant and saw many bodies of his people strewn across the sandy white beaches now stained red with blood.
5.Upon seeing so many of his people being killed by the ferocious fish, the king ordered the people to retreat immediately and declared that everyone stayed away from the coastline.
6.Meanwhile, he gathered all his advisors and tried to figure out a way to deal with the problem as Singapore dependended on its fishing and seas for trade.
7.At this time, a boy asked for the audience of the king.
'Your Highness, I may have a solution to the garfish. Why don't we line the beaches with bamboo stems, so when the garfish attack them, they will become stuck and we can kill them at our own leisure?'
8.The king, having no other solution, executed the plan and ordered his men to cut bamboo stems and firmly plant them along the beach at low tide.
9.Soon the tide came up and the schools of garfish approached. The king, his men and the little boy watched as the garfish began attacking the line of banana stems and getting their snouts stuck in the thick stems. When the last garfish got itself stuck, the men began to slay each and every one of the fish.
14.A shout of joy rang out throughout the kingdom and the people began to praise the boy for his cleverness, calling him a genius and a blessing from the Gods.
15.The king's heart began fill with jealousy and rage. That night, the king ordered his lieutenants to kill the boy that very night.
16.The boy lived with his mother on a small hill in the southern part of the island. His mother could not sleep that night and left the boy asleep in their hut to take a stroll.
17.The lieutenants walked up the hill holding their kris. Upon entering the hut, they began to stab the boy.
18.At first, the boy began to scream in pain and cry, his mattress was filled with blood. When the men stopped stabbing the boy, they noticed something was amiss. The blood did not stop flowing and became a fountain of blood. Scared, the lieutenants fled from the hut.
18.The fountain of blood oozed down the hill, covering it. The next morning, the people of Singapore gathered around the hill, wondering why it was red. After searching the hill, they found the boy's body and became sad, never knowing that it was their own king who plotted the boy's death.
As the hill was reddish, the people began calling it Bukit Merah, or Red Hill...in memory of the boy.
Long after the reign of Sang Nila Utama, the seas of Singapore were invaded by shoals of garfishes. These large fishes multiplied rapidly. The King was worried for the safety of the local population. The people of the island no longer dared to venture near the sea as each day there would always be someone killed by the swordfish. Talk spread among the people that this was an evil omen of the sign of things to come. The locals began to believe that the kingdom had somehow incurred the wrath of the gods and they were now being punished for it.
The talk soon reached the ears of the king, Paduka Seri, who was worried that he would somehow be blamed for these events. Fearful of the threat to his rule and the possibility of rebellion by his subjects, the king decided to rid the seas of the swordfishes.
On the appointed day, the King had his soldiers armed and ready on the beaches where the menace of the swordfish was greatest. The soldiers went into the waters and waited for the fish to come in with the tide. However, despite being well-armed, the King's men were no match for the swordfishes, which impaled themselves on the men. One after another, the men fell, seriously injured or killed. Their cries could be heard from far away.
Soon the sea was awash with the blood of the King's army. To avoid further slaughter, the King was forced to withdraw his men. But he also noticed a young boy taking a special interest in the events and laughing at the debacle. When brought before him, the lad said: " Majesty, I was just thinking that it would be better to form a barrier using banana tree trunks instead of your soldiers to fight the swordfish. There' ll be less bloodshed that way." The King was struck by the ingenuity and simplicity of the boy's idea and immediately adopted it.
Every banana tree on the island was felled in the effort. Soon, the people had erected a great wall of banana tree trunks along the beach. When the tide came in again, the imminent swordfish attack came. However, this time, the swordfish had their long, sharp points stuck into the tree trunks and were not able to free themselves. The islanders were thus able to kill the fish without any harm to themselves. The sea was red with the blood of the swordfish but the scourge was finally over.
Everyone on the island celebrated the victory, and the king rewarded the boy for his idea, but his ministers were unhappy and jealous. One of them whispered into the king's ear: "Even as a boy he is already so clever. Imagine what will happen when he grows up. Why, he might even usurp your throne."
Believing the slander, the king immediately ordered the boy to be executed.
One version of the legend has it that the boy was thrown into the sea near one of the islands south of Singapore. It is said that on certain nights his anguished cries could still be heard in the winds.
According to another version, the King's men went to a house on top of a hill where the boy was staying. When they reached the house, they found an old crone waiting for them. She said: "I know why all of you are here. The boy has saved the kingdom and yet you wish to kill him! You will all pay for this!"
The next moment, the earth opened up and bright red liquid flowed out. The following day, the hill had turned completely red to remind the people of the kingdom's guilty secret. The people hereafter named the hill Bukit Merah, or Red Hill.
1. What’s my coursework about?
My coursework is about giving my school canteen a brand new look, using mainly the theme of healthy diet. Transforming the different varieties of food into tables and chairs gives the canteen a new look instead of the same old dull designs in a typical school canteen.
2. What inspired me to do this topic?
After spending hours studying in the same boring classroom, you still had to face with the same situation in the dull and plain canteen. I thought it was rather boring to have my meals in this monotonous environment, and therefore I’ve decide to give my school canteen a new makeover. I’ve chosen to use the theme of healthy diet is to help promote a healthy lifestyle. Due to the busy schedules of people nowadays, they usually purchase "fast food" like snacks to save time. With the design of the different varieties of nutritious food, it helps to remind the teachers and students to have a balance diet and having proper meals.
3. How did I go about doing this coursework?
At the very beginning, I took some pictures of my school canteen and noted down what are the improvements I can do to the canteen. I also go around the shopping centres and extract some ideas from the many food courts that I’ve been to.
Next, I looked up some books based on the different types of nutritious food and did some sketches. Slowly, I metamorphize the different sketches of the food into chairs and tables. After completing some samples of the chairs and tables, I looked up the internet for some samples of different schools’ canteen.
I then proceeded on to work on my first layout for the stall, followed by my second layout making use of the tracing paper. I also drew some pictures for the interior of the stall. After which, I gave the flooring some designs, making use of a star fruit. With the help of the computer, I changed the star fruit into a more interesting design. Also, I gave each stall front an individual flooring design based on each of the different varieties of dishes sold.
I’ve modified the basin into a large one, so that the students can simply put all the plates into the same basin, as I noticed that some students tends to put their plates at the wrong stalls, while others just leave their cutleries and utensils lying around the canteen.
I drew some sketches of a can; the different stages of crushing a can and transforming the crushed can into a shape of a pillar. Next, I gave the notice board a new look, making use of the similar design as the flooring design.
Finally, I select 3 of my best design of chairs and tables and use them for my final artwork.
Lastly, I drew the different perspectives of my modified canteen, top view and 3 different perspectives.
When all the preparatory work was completed, I proceed on doing my model, measuring the scale of the actual size of the model and the scale on map. After all the measurements were done, I started working on the tables and chairs.
4. My final artwork
My final artwork was done on a board. I make use of many different types of materials to make the details within my canteen, etc; Styrofoam, aluminum, plastic, wood…
5. Evaluation of my work - any improvement that I want to make
It took me many months to complete this coursework, from the researches to the building of model.
